A Dog’s Not Just For Life, It’s For Your Health

Weekly exercise recommendations for people over 65 are being met in less than 50% of cases according to an article in The Express. The NHS recommends 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise, plus strength exercises twice a week that work all the main muscles of the body. There is one group of people who are closer to meeting this target however - dog owners.

Pet DogDoggy Daycare Improves Health

New research has indicated that those people who own a dog are getting far more of this recommended activity than those who don’t. Some findings from a study of over 3,000 adults include;

  • Pensioners with pets spend an average of 30 minutes a day outside when they would otherwise be sat down
  • Experts believe the health benefits of owning a pet are so great they say dog walking should be prescribed to keep people fit into old age
  • Those without a pet pooch spend an average of around 11 hours every day sitting down and tend to be less active when it rains
  • Physical activity levels are typically 20 per cent higher, and dog owners spend 30 fewer minutes every day sitting down than did people who don’t own dogs

As well as a focus and companionship, dogs can be great for your health too!

Recommended Exercise

The NHS recommendations span both aerobic and strength exercise. With sedentary behaviour considered an independent risk factor for ill health, it’s more important than ever to stay active.

Some examples of suggested moderate aerobic activity include;

  • Walking
  • Dancing
  • Pushing a lawn mower

Some examples of suggested vigorous aerobic activity include;

  • Jogging
  • Hiking
  • Riding a bike quickly

Some examples of suggested strengthening exercises include;

  • Carrying and moving groceries
  • Yoga
  • Heavy gardening
